Part 4

Epilogue:

This was what a perfect day for writing looked like. It was somewhat cloudy and cool, the morning sun peeking through to reflect off of the small creek that ran lazy and twisting behind Jensen’s new place. One of those perfect spring days, muggy, a light wind pushing the clouds across the sky and carrying the promise of a warmer afternoon. Jensen wondered if the water would be warm enough for a swim later in the day.

Wisteria hung on a trellis along one wall of the screened porch, making the light take on a kind of surreal green tinge. Jared had been right: the stuff did smell exactly like honey and burnt cork.

Jared had been right about a lot of things.

The porch’s wide planked floor felt rough beneath Jensen’s bare feet. It gave a rusty groan when he settled down into his chair, dragging it up to a small desk he’d slapped together out of cinderblocks and scrap lumber. A cardboard box full of blank paper sat next to his chair, his blown glass paperweight keeping them in place. Jensen lifted it, holding it up to catch the sun. It had a small chip in it, a short crack on a path to the center, and the light caught and refracted in the imperfection. Probably a result of the move. He’d been in a rush when he’d packed, had thrown out most of what he owned and given a lot of the rest away.

The shrill ring of Tennessee’s old telephone sounded through the open window. It rang three and a half times. Jensen ignored it, downed the rest of his cup of coffee, now lukewarm. The wind changed direction, and Jensen could hear the distant sound of his closest neighbor’s music, a half a mile away down a narrow paved road. One good thing about living in the middle of nowhere was that there weren’t a lot of distractions.

An open box sat at his ankle, a couple dozen first editions of his new book were stacked neatly inside, their glossy covers starting to curl in the humid air. There were three more cases like this one, all waiting to be signed and sent out to bookstores all over the country. He pulled one out and opened it, the spine creaking and the comforting bookstore smell of paper and glue hanging in the air. Jensen thumbed through the pages. They contained seven short stories and one novella. Early reviews had come back favorable, but that didn't matter a lot to Jensen. What mattered was that these three hundred some odd pages had bought him the time to work on something that he needed to write. He paused at the dedication, the thick paper catching on his thumbnail. He skimmed the words.

for jared, because there is honor amongst thieves

The trilling noise of the spring on the screen door sounded, followed by the slap of wood on the doorframe. Jensen loved that sound. It reminded him of summertime growing up in Texas, lazy heat and his grandmother’s back porch. Sneaking sips of sweet mint juleps while his grandmother and her sister pretended not to notice.

Jensen shivered some when Jared looped his arms around him from behind. His skin was warm from the shower, a little damp still. It took a long time to dry off when the air was so humid like this. Jensen leaned into the feeling of Jared’s chest along the bare skin of his back. He reached up, touched Jared’s hand, traced along the bumps of his knuckles, the bones of his fingers. He tilted his head to make more room when Jared kissed the crook of his neck.

“HarperCollins on the phone. That PR guy again,” Jared spoke into his skin. “He wants you to fly to Tulane for that book reading Misha won’t shut up about.”

Jensen hummed his reply. They both knew he had no intention of going anywhere. Not for the time being, anyway. He was working, had been writing consistently for the last few months, and was superstitious about it. Now wasn’t the time to break the pattern.

He flicked the switch on his typewriter, the metal case offering a comforting sort of vibration under his palm. He fed a blank sheet of paper into the roller, centered it and typed a number one.

“Are you ready?” Jared asked.

“I think so,” Jensen replied. He paused, chewing thoughtfully on his lower lip. “You know, someone once told me that there were only two kinds of stories in the world. One of them starts out, ‘a stranger comes to town’.”

Jensen felt Jared’s smile on his skin. “So how does the other one go?”

“A man goes on a journey,” Jensen told him.

Jared kissed the back of his neck, giving his shoulders a final squeeze. “Okay. Then go.” He crossed the porch, had his hand on the door handle and turned back again. “And Jensen?”

“Yeah?”

“Make sure you take the long way home.”

Thanks for reading.

This was a Great read, thank you so much for writing and sharing it... Misha was awesome, I love Jared's eagerness and fanboyiness when it came to Jensen, and it was also nice to see how much they loved each other towards the end. With all that said I really hope to see timestamps or something as I would love to see what else Jared convinces Jensen to do in order to keep the creative juices flowing and Misha is always refreshing addition.

Such a lovely compliment. Misha was a joy to write here, and who wouldn't want to fanboy Jensen a little bit? He's very fanboy-able, after all. Timestamps, you ask? It's lovely to know that you'd want to hear more out of these characters, and it's never completely out of the realm of possibility. Thanks so much.

Oh, this was an awesome read. I was hooked from the opening scene because wow, story of my life. (The rest of the fic, however, is sadly not.) I really dig the way Jared and Jensen just kind of flowed together, and Misha was a very great secondary character. Possibly my favorite thing though are the various references to books and authors - I legit lol'd when Jensen was working to the stylings of Anne Rice.

Goodness, yes--we can all speak from personal experience with this one, huh? As for the rest of the fic, well, it's not bad to indulge in some wishful thinking now and again. Hell, I know thats why I write the stuff. Great to know that you liked the string of writers and books throughout the thing, and I'm pretty sure that Anne Rice has written chapters on wisteria. Chapters. Thanks so much!

This is an absolutely wonderful story. Your writing is beautiful and perfect for the story you told. I like that the conflicts were realistic, nothing too overly dramatic or ridiculous, but enough that it didn't just seem like easy going the whole time. I liked the development of Jared and Jensen's relationship— and I'm happy to see the happy ending of the epilogue, although I also like the ambiguity of the ending before that point— and Misha's character was great too. I loved this ♥

Also, the general premise and the tone of your story reminded me a bit of Wonder Boys, so it made me smile to see the mention of Grady Tripp in your notes. :)

Wow, such lovely feedback. As for the Wonderboys references, I didn't even realize that I was inspired by Grady Tripp until I was pages and pages into writing the thing.

Thanks for the note on the style of this. I'm completely with you on the ambiguous ending, and came very close to scrapping the epilogue entirely. My beta forbade me to leave it so up in the air. Again, many thanks!

I am so in love with your writing style, Ri, I can't even tell you. I could fangirl you forever and it still wouldn't be enough.

I loved Misha in this, and that's a feat all on it's own! I really enjoyed how realistic you made all this, how everyone had their own quirks, how FUN this was. Thank you <3

Aw, shucks, sweetheart. Comments like this are my kryptonite; they make me all weak in the knees and giddy. Thank you for that. I love quirky characters-one of the reasons it was so much fun to write this-and I'm so glad that I could make you even like Misha here!

Of course! Stalkers are always welcome. Friends too. ♥

Heh: I had to check your notes to see if my suspicions were true. I'm glad I found confirmation you were slightly inspired by Wonderboys;) When I started reading I was initially a little confused by the characters and had had to shake off the images of Michael Douglas and Robert Downey Jr before I could really get into it. *grins* I did enjoy the story very much though, loved the dynamics between Jared, Jensen and Misha:) It was a fun read!

That was lovely. Like a study in writing within the writing. Effortless and smooth and touching. The last chapter choked me up. In a relatively short amount of words you really brought their relationship alive. I adored the larceny and the way that was paid off on the statue was brilliant.

Really this entire story was brilliant. A keeper for sure.

Beautiful.

Goodness. I felt so self indulgent writing this one--a story about writers writing. It's the old saying 'write what you know,' and when I started this story, the only thing I knew at that point was how not to write. So glad that you liked their hijinks. Thanks very much.

Oh, I enjoyed the HELL out of this. Your characterizations of both Jared and Jensen (and Misha, of course!) were wonderful; I loved how they all just kind of clicked in their own ways. I love how much life Jared brought to Jensen's life and how they both treated the relationship as only adults. Albeit creative adults and we all know artists are a different breed.

But seriously, I loved this. Especially that last scene at the airport. I got a bit choked up there. Lovely job! Thank you for the wonderful read!

It's great to hear that you liked this! It was a lot of fun building these characters, all their quirks and peculiarities, swimming around in that odd combination of ego driven self deprecation. you got me with this fic. Like, I can't explain. This is not the first Writers!fic I have read for sure but it was like with the others, writing was just an excuse to build a drama/angsty/sugary J2 fics. Like it was just what one of the boys did. But this was different, you wrote a plot for Jared and Jensen and their relationship of course but you also wrote about writing for real and I appreciated it.
I don't know if you write for a living or you just do it for fun but it seemed you knew what you were talking about there. It captured me.
Moreover your style is just so smooth but also attentive, neat, detailed. Loved it.

great job all in all. Congrats! ;)

From: [identity profile] riyku.livejournal.com
Thanks for the note! You're right. I've read several fics where one of the boys were writers, but it was simply what they did--it wasn't actually about writing, and I wanted to do something that was all about finding the right inspiration to write. So glad it worked for you.

I do write for a living, after a fashion, but it's scientific writing, so fiction is something that I do for fun. It's my hobby. Thanks for the nod on the style as well. I'm very happy you liked it. Thanks again!

A wonderful, beautifully written story. I'm quite at a loss on how to tell you how wonderful it is, I have the thoughts rolling in my head, but they seem so inadequate somehow - reading it was a bit like lying snugged in a cocoon of blankets with hot chocolate by my side, with birds chirping outside my window and the smell of flowers and baking bread and freshly cut grass in the air, that's how good it made me feel.

Thank you so much for writing this, I love it.

God that was good. I'm a total romantic at heart and that made me smile from beginning to end. I was really surprised Jared was already there in the epilogue but I'm glad he was- it was fitting somehow. I nearly died when they parted at the airport but then I saw the epilogue and breathed a sigh of relief that you weren't doing one of those- 'And he changed my life but I never saw him again' stories. The two characters were the perfect compliment to each other- Jensen- solitary and serious, Jared- friendly and care-free- showing the other a different side of life and bringing the best of out them. I loved that fact that they stole Reedy's award- hilarious and the car was awesome- do love a nice car. Anyway, really enjoyed reading this and thanks for writing it. xxx

Goodness. Very late response here. Sorry for that. As for the epilogue, I very nearly cut if for exactly the reasons you stated, but my tendency toward a happy ending, and by beta's adamant opinions on the matter, saw me keeping it in. So glad you liked the characterization here; it was fun writing all those little personality quirks, and that their hijinks were amusing. Very many thanks!
